Monoprix, ready to enter Bitcoin “from the end of the year”

Monoprix announced on Wednesday, April 9 that it will be ready to accept bitcoin payments by the end of the year

French retail chain Monoprix announced on Wednesday, April 9 that it will be ready to accept bitcoin payments by the end of the year. “At Monoprix, many of us believe in that,” Patrick Oualid, Monoprix’s director of e-commerce, explained in an interview with Journal du Net. “Bitcoin is not a flash in the pan (…) we have to start, it’s in our DNA,” he added.

Bitcoin, a virtual currency that has been warned by multiple governments, is currently only used by a handful of small sites in France. As such, Monoprix could be the first major brand to adopt it in France.

Regarding implementation, “the priority is the website, but we always deal with both web and mobile channels. So, as Mr. Oualid explained, the store could be affected as well. Technically, it seems to me that it’s not hard to integrate. That way, if an outbreak happens in 2015, we’re ready.»

“Bitcoin is really the subject of huge distrust (especially in France). We don’t yet fully understand the scope of the subject. However, I believe disbelief in it is like disbelief in social networks some time ago,”argues the director.

“It’s okay if Bitcoin doesn’t give us a drop in sales. By positioning ourselves now (…), we start our learning curve. Mr. Oualid estimates that, as opposed to actors, they will wait three to five years, and wipe the plaster when it may have entered the liturgy.
