Followers of Elon Musk, Joe Biden, Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Warren Buffett see bizarre post: They have 30 minutes to send $1,000 worth of Bitcoin , in exchange for double the amount of Bitcoin.
Twitter’s investigation into the hacking of the official accounts of celebrities such as Elon Musk and Joe Biden has raised questions about the security of the platform, which is crucial to the political campaign leading to the US presidential election in November.
Text messages tell people they have 30 minutes to send $1,000 worth of bitcoin and they’ll get double the return.
Twitter explained: “We detected what we believe to be individual coordinated technical attacks that successfully targeted some of our employees who had access to our internal systems and tools.”
“It’s been a tough day for Twitter,” Twitter boss Jack Dorsey said. “We are all very saddened by what happened. We are in the process of diagnosing and will share as much as we can once we have a better understanding of what happened.”
The messages, which have mostly been deleted, appeared on the accounts of numerous high-profile users, including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, tycoon Warren Buffett, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and the corporate accounts of Uber and Apple.
Blockchain.com, a website that monitors cryptocurrency transactions, said about 12.58 bitcoins, equivalent to about $116,000, were sent to the email addresses mentioned in the fraudulent tweets.
